Judah’s appeal to Joseph was in reality a prayer for G-d’s help. Only a Divine punishment could have heaped such harshness agains them, so only G-d’s help could spare them. Judah’s words were directed to Joseph, but in his heart he was speaking to G-d. From: The Artscroll Tanach Series–Volume 1(b).
