We will conclude by praising HaShem who has guided us through the mysteries of the creation, with words of Yeshaya ben Omotz haNovi (40), which recapitulate most of the subjects we have discussed in this sayfer:

Who measured the waters with His tread; the heavens by His hand breadth; calculated with a gauge the soil of the earth; weighed the mountains in a scale, and the hills in a balance?… Don’t you know? Haven’t you been told from the beginning? Don’t you understand the foundations of the earth? Raise your eyes to the heavens and see Who created these, Who brings out their hosts by number; He calls them all by name, with great energy and power; not one is missing… Herald of Tzion, go up to a high mountain; raise your voice, news bearer to Yershola’im, shout do not fear; say to the cities of Yehudi, “Here is HaShem!” HaShem will come in strength; His power is overwhelming; His reward is with Him, and His payroll is before Him. Like a Sheppard He will graze His flock; with His arm He will gather lambs, and in His bosom He will carry; infants He will lead… A voice calls in the desert, “Make way for HaShem, make a straight path on the plains for HaShem.” Every ravine will be raised, and every mountain and hill will be lowered; the crooked will become straight, and the heights will become valleys. The glory of HaShem will be revealed, and all flesh together will see that the mouth of HaShem has spoken.

Tanchuma, KiTisa 36 writes: When Moshe was in heaven how did he know it was day and when it was night? When HaShem taught him Torah Shebichav, the written Torah, he knew it was day; when He taught him orally, the Torah Sheball Pe, the oral Torah, the Mishnah and Talmud he knew it was night.

Day and night are defined by the revolutions of the earth. The hemisphere facing the sun experiences day, the other, night. When it is evening at one spot, it is still day not too many miles to the west. If so, what relevance does day and night have in heaven? At any given moment, at every hour of the clock, it is day and night different parts of the globe.
If we are inclined to avoid this difficulty by assuming that Moshe was interested in day and night at Har Sinai, from where he came and where Israel was encamped, we still have not resolved our troubled mind. The G’morrah (Avoda Zora 3B) informs us that HaShem Himself has a – very mysterious – schedule based on the hours of day and night.

How does praying in the direction of the menorah or the Lechem haPonnim (the table of bread)? Two answer this we must understand that the divine service that we perform is not for HaShem’s benefit but for ours, as HaShem proclaimed (Psalms 15:8-15):
I will not rebuke you over your sacrifices; your burnt offerings are before Me always. I do not demand an Ox from your house; Billy goats from your pens.  For all the beasts of the fields are Mine; the animals in mountains full with wildlife. I know all the birds of the mountains, and the creepers of the field are in My possession. If I were to hunger I would not tell you, for the world and its fill are Mine. Do I eat the flesh of Bulls? Do I drink the blood of Billy goats? Rather, slaughter for HaShem an offering of thanks; pay to the Highest your vows; then call Me in the day of trouble; I will save you and you will honor Me.

The mountains saw you; they trembled; the storm water passed; the depths gave forth their voice, He raised His hand high. The sun and moon stood in their place; they go to the light of Your arrows; with the gleam of the lightning of Your spear. The Ramban (on the first verse of Parshat Truma) tells us that the presence of HaShem in the Mishkon  was identical to its appearance at Har Sinai. Thus it is no surprise that the light from heaven can take the form of lighting.
We need not to be concerned that Chazal call the phenomenon “fire” (and the verse in Yitro calls it “torches”), while we assert it is electricity. The law is universally acknowledged that we may not light and electrical light on Shabbat because to do so would violate the prohibition (vaYak’hel, Sh’mos 35:3).
You shall not light fire in all your dwellings on the day of Shabbat.

HaShem commanded to Aharon to light the menorah in the Ohel Moayd outside the Kodesh haKoddoshim, (Leviticus 24:3), “from evening to morning before HaShem always. Does HaShem then need the light?  The entire forty years that Israel traveled in the desert HaShem provided them with light; certainly He didn’t need Israel to light his way. Rather, the menorah is evidence to all the people of the world that HaShem is imminent with Israel, for the western candle burnt miraculously for 24 hours each day and never when out.
Tosfos are troubled by the comment, “The whole forty years that Israel traveled in the desert HaShem provided them with light. “Why doesn’t the G’morrah say, more universally, “The whole world is lit, always, by HaShem’s light?” Tosfos explain that the G’morrah doesn’t mean to ask, “Did HaShem need the light that was lit in His house?”, but rather, “ even the cohanim who entered the Mishkon need the light of the menorah so that they could see, as the Mishkon had no windows? The camp of Israel was illuminated by a miraculous light for forty years. To that the Gomorrah answers that there was no need. The light served merely to show the world that HaShem’s presence was with Israel. (Shabbot 22B)

Seven things were created before the world: the Kisei haKavod (HaShems Glorious Throne); the Torah; the Beit haMikdosh; the Avot; Yisrael; the name of the Mashiach; and teshuva. Some also add Gan Eden and Gehinom. When HaShem instructed Moshe to tell Yisrael to build a Miskon HaShem said to him, “Moshe, My Beit Mikdoah already exists in heaven, as Jerimiah 17:12 states, ‘The Kisei haKavod, high from the first; the place of our Beit haMikdosh.’ There is the Haychol and there is My Glorious Throne.”

We see, then, that the word of HaShem comes down from heaven to the Kodesh haKoddoshim between the Cruvim above the Caporess. Then it makes a ninety degree turn through the poles of the Oron and proceeds into the Haychol (which is the equivalent, in the Beit haMikdosh, or the Mishkon or “Ohel Moayd” in the desert), onto the golden or “inner” mizbayach, and from there to the doorway of the Haychol, where the prophet receives it.

Now, it is evident from the catalog of miracles we have studied that as one goes deeper into the Beit haMikdosh the miracles become progressively more common. In the outside world nissim are rarities, only performed at the greatest, earth-shaking, necessity. In Jerusalem there were certain miracles that were common, though necessary to a certain extent. However, they were miracles in a statistical sense only. A stay in Jerusalem, or even a lifetime there, without getting bitten by a snake or a scorpion is not miraculous. Only the cumulative evidence that never did a bite occur makes us realize a nes has occurred. In the Azora there were constant miracles that weren’t terribly necessary. A pregnant woman could avoid the Azora. If the column of smoke did not rise in a straight line the korbonos would be still perfectly acceptable.

When HaShem created the universe, then, He first created, as the astronomers tells us, though not taking the billions of years they so confidently specify, a speck of super-dense matter and caused it to explode. When the earth, the sun, the planets, and the stars which grew out of the explosion reached the size that HaShem planned for them He commanded them to stop growing.

We need not bother that astronomers assert that the universe began with one particle of matter, while the Sages mention “two spools of thread.” Astronomers and the Sages are referring to two different moments. The universe did begin with one speck of super-dense matter which began expanding. At the next moment HaShem divided the matter into two equal parts. From one the earth was created and from the other, heaven.

When HaShem had Ya’akov Obinu stay the night at the site of the Beit haMikdash, He by that very fact, without doing anything to the structure of Eretz Yisrael, assured that all the land was beneath him, for the rock he slept on, its deepest parts, underlies all Eretz Yisrael. Afterwards HaShem took the loose stone on which he had laid his head and sunk it into the earth and attached it to the primeval Foundation Stone (Evven Shetiyah)around which the world was created.

Seven things were created before the world: the Torah, t’shuva, Gan Eden, Gehinom, the Kisei haKavod, the Beit haMikdash, and the name of the Mashiach. We know that the Kisei haKavod and the Beit haMikdash were so created, for Scripture (Yirmiya 17:12) states, “The Glorious Throne, high from the first; the place of our Beit haMikdash.”

At the end of days the mountain of the House of HaShem will be established atop the mountains and raised above the hills, and all the nations will stream to it. Many peoples will go, saying, “Let us go and ascend to HaShem’s mountain; to the House of HaShem of Ya’akov, and He will teach us of His ways and we will walk in His paths,” for Torah will come out of Tzion and the word of HaShem from Yerushola’im (Jerusalem). It is clear from the Torah and the works of the prophets that HaShem is not corporeal. The Torah (Deuteronomy 4:39) states “HaShem is the L-rd in the heavens above and on the earth below.” A body cannot occupy two places at once. Moshe reminded Israel, “You saw no image when HaShem spoke to you at Chorev.”

Whenever the word Toldot –descendants or “developments”–appears in the Scripture, it is missing a letter vav, with two exceptions: “These are the toldot–developments–of heaven and earth as they were created” (Bereishit 2:4), and “These are the toldot–descendants of Peretz” (Rus 4:18); in boththese cases the word contains two vav’s. There is a reason for this. There are six benefits in the original creation that Adam ha Rishon lost when he sinned, and the letter vav signfies “six.” The benfits are: 1) The radiance of his face; 2) his height 3) his longevity 4)the fruit of the earth 5) Gan Ayden 6) the sun and the moon. These things will be restored in Olam ha Bah.

The fact the water above-ground flows from high ground to low does not disturb this, for springs do flow out of the ground at high places. The reason for this is that they are under pressure, just as, water flows through pipes to the fixtures on the top of a tall building. The pressure is supplied by Gehinom whose raging presses against the t’hom.

When the resho’im (evil doers) speak loshon hara the sin becomes devastation all the way up to the Kisay haKavod (the Throne of Glory) and HaShem commissions anels to throw the wicked speakers into the depths of Gehinom. Gehinom responds, “Lord of the World, I do not have the power to punish these scoundrels as much as they deserve. You help me! Shoot arrows at them from above and I will burn them with the fiery coals below.”

Seven things preceded the world…From the sages we deduced the Gehinom preceded the world (Isaiah 30:33): “Gehinom is prepared from the previous day; it is ready for kings, too; it is deepened; it is broadened; its furnace is full of fire and much fuel; HaShem’s breath is like a river of fire burning in it.”  What does: “It is deepened; it is broadened” mean? An angel prepares each person’s place in it so that it fits their height.

Moshe said (Korach, BaMidbar 16:30), “If HaShem creates a new creation,” meaning, If Gehinom already exists, that will serve; if not HaShem will create it.” That can’t be! Moshe could not have been unsure whether Gehinom already existed, for we learn, “Seven things were created before the earth: 1) Torah, 2) T’shuva, 3) Gan Ayden, 4) Gehinom, 5) the Kisay haKovod, 6) the Bat haMikdosh, 7) the name of the Moshiach.” Moshe meant, then, “If Gehinom already has an opening on the surface of the earth, that will serve; if not, HaShem will create one.” That, too can’t be! Scripture (Kohelles 1:9) tells us, “There is nothing new under the sun.” Rather, Moshe announced, “If an opening to Gehinom is already located here, that will serve; if not, HaShem will bring one to this spot.”

When Adom haRishon was expelled from Gan Ayden he settled at Mt. Moria (the site of the Bat haMakdosh) because the gates of Gan Ayden are adjacent to Mt Moria.

The Sages (Ta’anis 10A) relates the size: Mitzraim is four hundred parsot (parsa is about 2.7 miles) by four hundred parsot. Mitzraim is one-sixtieth the size of Cush. Cush is one-sixtieth the size of the world. The world is one-sixtieth of the Garden. The Garden is one-sixtieth the size of Ayden.

Rabbi bar Abuha found Eliyohu standing in a gentile cemetery and asked him, “Are you not a cohen? What are you doing in a cemetery?” Eliyohu countered, “Did you not study Taharot? There we learn, ‘Rabbi Shimon ben Yochai asserts that gentile graves do not defile.’” Responded Rabbi, “I did not know that. I can’t keep up with the four orders of Mishna that are generally applicable today. I certainly can’t study all six.” “Why don’t you devote more time to studying?” “Because of my poverty; I must spend considerable time earning a living.” Eliyohu took Rabbi into Gan Ayden and told him, “Fill your cloak with the leaves laying on the ground.” He did so. As he was leaving he heard a voice, “Who is so foolish as to consume his destiny in Olam haZe as Rabbi bar Abuha is doing?” He instanly dropped the leaves. Nevertheless his cloak so absorbed in aroma that he later sold it as perfume for $30,000. He refused to use the money on himself, however, and divided it among his sons-in-law. Gan Ayden (Garden of Eden) exist in this world in a specific place. Four rivers flow from it, one of which flows past Eretz Yisrael (The Land of Israel), just as the Torah explicitly tells us. These verses are not allegorical at all but literal facts… From the works of the Sages this is so clear that it hardly bears mentioning that Gan Ayden is an actual garden and a physical site.
