Biblical Faith – with Shmuel “Sam” Peak

Weekly series with new shows available every Tuesday.

Mishnah 22

Rabbi Yaakov says: Better one hour of repentance and good deeds in this world than the entire life of the World-to-Come.
Repentance is possible only in this world, which the previous mishnah referred to as the “lobby” in front of the “banquet hall.” This is our only opportunity to prepare for the World-to-Come, as the “banquet hall” was made only for dinning, not for preparing.

Light to the Nations – with Rabbi Chaim Richman
Weekly series with new teachings available every Thursday.
Next week on Light to the Nations:
Building the Temple, Part VIII

Midrashic and kabbalistic literature abounds in which the Holy Temple is described in spiritual terms. These homelitical teachings do not contradict or override the Torah imperative for building a physical Holy Temple.

Bat Melech – with Rena Richman
Bat Melech teachings appear every second Wednesday.
Next Bat Melech: February 16, 2011 / I Adar 12, 5771

We are all familiar with the ten commandments, but most likely not fully aware of the depth and breadth of the spiritual message embodied in each of the ten life-instructions which are contained on the two Tablets of the Law.

This teaching was initially posted in May 2010.

This week features:

Parashat Teruma & the Holy Temple Today: The Ultimate Litmus Test

“And They Shall Make For Me a Sanctuary:” G-d Asks For a Place in This World

Parashat Teruma! It is the raison d’etre for everything that we do at the Temple Institute. “And you shall make for Me a Sanctuary” is G-d’s desire… that we let Him in to this world. Rabbi Richman, just back from his never ending journey throughout the great United States, and stranded for four days in the snows of New Jersey, now reunited with his best friend Yitzchak Reuven, shares his experiences and reflects upon the “Temple Conundrum:” Who is the Holy Temple for, anyway? So many people think it is either problematic, archaic, dangerous, or inconvenient. But those opinions are…. opinions. Whatever happened to doing something for G-d? Remember Him? As Rashi so eloquently states: “For My Name’s sake… “

“They shall make an ark of acacia wood” (Exodus 25:10) Aron HaBrit – The Ark of the Covenant – performs no function in the Divine service, and is approached but once a year when the Kohen Gadol – the High Priest – enters the Holy of Holies on Yom Kippur – the Day of Atonement. It is the one Temple vessel that actually serves as a permanent receptacle – holding the Tablets of the Law. Yet of all the vessels described in the Torah reading of Terumah, the Ark of the Covenant remains the most compelling to the imagination. From the Ark emanates the supernal light of Torah and a reflection in this world of the perfected world and the pure light of the Garden of Eden.

Terumah (Exodus 25:1-27:19)
Parashat Terumah is read on Shabbat:

Mishnah 21 Part Three

The physical characteristics that comes of having a beginning allow a change and hence preparation. That is why this world is the opportunity to prepare for the next world. Since the World to Come is a place of stability and durability, it is too late to make preparations there.
In a shell, only this world offers the opportunity to prepare for eternity.

In memory of Robert Johnson
