Light to the Nations – with Rabbi Chaim Richman
Weekly series of short messages concerning the weekly Torah Portion.
How strange: A Torah portion that begins with the description of the Red Heifer, the meaning of which we are told only Moses could comprehend, ends with Moses’ fateful error where he strikes the rock that G-d has commended him to speak to. The beginning almost seems to contradict the end!
Not so: The same humility and lack of ego which enabled Moses to perceive G-d’s will concerning the Red Heifer also motivated Moses to insist that the account of his grievous error likewise be duly recorded by Torah.

King David wrote (Psalms 104: 20-23), “HaShem/Elokim makes darkness, and it is night, and all the beasts of the forest creep forth…The sun rises, they slink away…Mankind then goes forth to their work, and to labor until evening.”
Even through nighttime in general is the time when these Forces have authority, this is actually only true of the first half of the night. At midnight, an Influence of Illumination and favor emanates from HaShem/Elokim to all worlds, and authority is taken away from these Forces of evil.

With the understanding we have learned, we need not wonder why HaShem/Elokim promised to eradicate the establishment He had made, when, in the event, He did not do so. While mankind was not quiet entirely wiped out, the establishment, the structure of mankind, was. For this reason, too, the genealogy from Adam to Noach calls itself (Bereishit 5:1): “This is an account of the descendants of man.” The genealogy totals each individual’s life span, for the purpose of the genealogy is to relate the history of those individuals.
The purpose of the mabbul, however, is unconcerned with individuals. The purpose is to relate the development of the races of mankind, the nations into which the children of Noach were to be divided. Therefore, the genealogy is prefaced (Noach, Bereishit 9:18,19): “The three sons of Noach who emerged from the ark were Shem, Cham, and Yafet, and the descendants of these spread over the whole earth.

Light to the Nations – with Rabbi Chaim Richman
Weekly series of short messages concerning the weekly Torah Portion.
“Not big enough for the both of us!” When a man, even a great man, remains humble and small in his own eyes, he will acknowledge that there is room in creation for both G-d, and Torah and himself. But when a man, even a wise and learned man, such as Korach, becomes great in his own eyes, he eliminates G-d and Torah from his world, leaving G-d little choice but to put him in his place.

Prayer is a daily obligation, requesting HaShem/Elokim’s good be supplied without interruption. One of the conditions ordained by the Highest Wisdom was that in order for mankind to receive sustenance form HaShem/Elokim, they must first motivate themselves in HaShem/Elokim direction and turn to HaShem/Elokim to request their needs. HaShem/Elokim desires and wills to constantly benefit mankind. He therefore arranged that prayer be a daily obligation. Through it, mankind receives sustenance, success and blessing according to their needs, as dictated by their state of being.
