Chapter 3 17b
The sages teach us that wisdom (intellect) is not an intrinsic part of us, but is acquired and can be lost. Silence helps us to acquire wisdom, plus it helps us to maintain the wisdom acquired. The faculty of speech is somewhat physical, which is the opposite of intellectual. Since opposites cannot exist simultaneously, one must suspend conceptual activity in order to speak aloud. Hence, therefore, silence strengths the intellect (wisdom) by enabling it to act effectively.
In this age of instant access to endless information, we are tempted to try to know everything! Is curiosity necessary a good thing, or is it sometimes, as our sages suggest, an offshoot of arrogance? True wisdom is in the acknowledgment that there are things that lie beyond our intellectual grasp. This wisdom is the portal to purity.
