Temple Talk is a weekly internet radio webcast with Rabbi Chaim Richman and Yitzchak Reuven of the Temple Institute.
This week features:
Translating the Torah, Worshiping the Golden Calf & Other Illusions:
It’s All Greek to Me
The Death of Ezra and Nehemiah & the Lack of True Jewish Leaders
The month of Tevet enters with the blessings of rain in the Land of Israel. But this month is traditionally considered to be a time of portent and distress, and features a public fast day, the 10th of Tevet, which commemorates a siege around Jerusalem that led to the destruction of the first Holy Temple. Is Jerusalem still besieged…or are its inhabitants just suffering from a siege mentality?
The 8th and 9th days of Tevet used to be fast days, as well: For the day that the Torah was translated into Greek, and for the passing of the great leaders Ezra and Nehemiah. The day a translation of the Torah was forced by King Ptolmely is considered to be especially bleak. In fact the translation of the Torah is called a calamity equal to the creation of the Golden Calf! Why should Torah in another language be considered a tragedy?
