If you have questions on the subject of G-d’s unity, about His Names and attributes, or on any of the fundamentals of the religion; such as the service of G-d, trust in Him, humility before Him, devoting to Him all that one does, refining good deeds from any detrimental defects, turning from sin, fear of G-d, love of G-d, diffidence before Him, self-accounting which is purely motivated, and similar matters which one can discover through the Torah Sages, the bearers of tradition, and rely exclusively on their tradition.

Duties of the Heart: Prayer Fasting and Charity
From the point of view of reason, man, as we know, is made up of body and soul; both of these are great favors which the Creator has bestowed upon us. One is seen, the other unseen. We, in turn, are duty bound to serve the Creator both, outwardly and inwardly. Outwardly, through the duties of the limbs: prayer, fasting and charity; the study and teaching of Torah and any other precept which culminates in the act that is carried out by the body. Inwardly, through the duties of the heart: by acknowledging in our heart G-d’s unity; having faith in Him and in His Torah; assuming His service; by being in awe of Him; humbling oneself and feeling shame before Him; loving Him; trusting in Him; . . .

Blessed be HaShem, the G-d of Yisra’el, the only One Who is truly One; Whose existence is eternal, and Whose goodness is perpetual; Who created all that exists as evidence of His oneness, formed creations as testimony of His might, and brought things into being to bear witness to His Wisdom and great goodness, as it is written: Tehillim (Psalms) 145:4; 10-12

Rabbenu Bachya ibn Paquda’s “Duties of the Heart” is a powerful work that can help you attain a more uplifted state of mind than the one you were in before the reading. It is a book about inwardness and about one’s conception of G-d. It is about reflection and gratitude, trust and sincerity, discipline and love. It is a book about the inner life.
