“Now, there was found in it a man who was poor but wise” refers to the intellect. It is termed “poor” because its followers and supporters are few, as it says further: “Yet no one remembered this poor man …. The poor man’s wisdom is despised” (Koheles 9:15-16).
The substance of the story is that, despite the intellect’s weakness, when it combats the evil inclination the latter quickly submits to it, and the threat posed to man by the evil inclination is easily dispelled. For a little truth overcomes much falsehood, just as a little light dispels much darkness.
One can draw inspiration from this story to combat one’s passion and to stand up to one’s baser instinct with vigor and perseverance, because it demonstrates the inability of the evil inclination to stand before the intellect, and the speed with which falls before it. As it says in Scripture, “The evil bow low before the good” (Mishlei 14:19).

The acts that, to be perfected, must be wholly devoted to G-d when they are performed are the acts of worship, through which we hope to attain G-d’s favor, namely, all the observable duties, performed with the limbs. In these, one’s aim in doing them might be something other than for the sake of G-d. One’s aim might be to adorn himself with them before other people, and to be honored and praised by people for having performed them.
It is impossible, however, to curry favor or gain honor and praise by fulfilling any of the duties the heart, because people do not know what is in one’s heart. Rather, one intends them for the sake of the One Who observes, namely, the Creator, alone, as it says: “I, G-d, search the heart and test the mind” (Yirmiyahu 17:10); “The hidden things belong to HaShem our G-d” (Devarim 29:28).

Since we have completed the exposition of what belongs to this gate, according to our understanding, it is now fitting to explain the things that are detrimental to trust in G-d.
I say that all the things that are as detrimental in the preceding gates are detrimental to trust [as well].
Also detrimental is ignorance of the Creator and His good attributes. For whoever fails to appreciate the Creator’s compassion for His creatures, His protection of them, His providence, dominion, and control over them, will not be confident in Him and will not rely on Him.
Another thing that is detrimental is ignorance of the Creator’s command, i.e., His Torah, in which He charged us to relay on Him and to trust in Him, as it says: “Prove Me now in this…” (Malachi 3:10); “Trust in G-d for ever and ever” (Yeshiyahu 26:4).
Another [harmful thing] is becoming enamored with the immediate causes, which on can see, without realizing that the closer a cause is to the effect, the less is its power to help or harm the one affected by it; while the more remote it is, the greater and more manifest is its power to help or harm him.
