Chapter 4 Mishnah 1
Who is wise…strong…rich…honored?
The common external measures of these qualities–academic, success, physical prowess, assets and honors–do not reflect a person’s true nature, just as the description of a house tells little about the person who lives inside. In contrast, ben Zoma’s discussion of these qualities focuses on the very essence of a person.

Chapter 3 23
Essential laws…versus…the seasonings of wisdom.
Torah law is the mainstay of society and of meaningful human endeavor. It is the “meat and potatoes” of the knowledge required to get through life successfully. Science is like seasonings and merely facilitate consumption of the main meal, because it does not contribute to proper moral or social conduct. Precise as these sciences may be, there is nothing in them that can help to sustain the soul of being spiritual success.

Chapter 3 21 and 22
Anyone whose wisdom exceeds his good deeds is likened …to a tree.
It must be noted that this Mishnah does not imply that there is a limit to intellectual achievement. A tree whose root system is fully mature can support continuous growth of its branch structure for as long as the root system remains full and strong. This is true of an individual as well, for once our practice of good deeds is fully established, we have no lack of ability to stand against adversity. At that point, we can develop our Torah knowledge continuously and still be able to cope with all of life’s difficulties.

Chapter 3 21b
If there is no wisdom…If there is no knowledge…If there is no understanding.
Chochmah–Knowledge and comprehension.
Binah–Understanding:Deducing implications from what is already known, exercising creativity and initiative.
Daat–Translated in our mishnah as simply “knowledge”, it is an expert, intimate knowledge of the very essence of things.

Chapter 3 21a
If there is no wisdom, there is no fear of HaShem;
If there is no fear of HaShem, there is no wisdom.
The purpose of wisdom is repentance and good deeds, so that an individual should not study Torah and/or Mishnah and then rebel against their father or mother…or anyone greater than they are… as it says, “The beginning of wisdom is the fear of HaShem” (Psalms 110:10)

Chapter 3 20b
The World to Come
Rav, a sixth-century Sage of the Talmud, would say:
In the World to Come, there is no eating or drinking, no procreation, no business, no jealousy and hatred. Rather, the righteous sit with crowns upon their heads, and feast upon the splendor of the Divine Presence.

Chapter 3 20
Everything is given on collateral, and a net is spread over all the living.
Rabbi Eliezer says that if a person, who having reached the stage of transformation from fear of sin where only one mitzvah is lacking, then acts from that one mitzvah which is the love for HaShem, then “Happy is he that he tilts the balance of himself and the whole world to the side of merit.”
