Chapter 3 Mishnah 8 & 9
In the study of Torah these steps are recommended:
- Full existence is found only with matters of sechel (intellect).
- Torah is sechel, and therefore Torah is referred to as “your life and the length of your days.”
- Things that inherently belong together do not separate from each other. For that reason, separating from something demonstrates opposition to it.
- Therefore, one who separates from Torah opposes life, and one who opposes life certainly places their life at risk.

Chapter 3 Mishnah 7
As the Source of human existence, HaShem wants to be with those who are dependent upon Him. When there is a group of ten, which reflects His completeness, He brings His presence to them at His initiative. When the group is less than ten people, the group initiates the relationship by engaging in study and only then does the Divine Presence come, out of His love for His people, as the verse says, “I will come to you and bless you.”

Chapter 3 Mishnah 5
Life is fraught with danger. Robbery, physical illness and emotional distress are some of the dangers that threaten us. These are a natural part of HaShem’s Creation, but He also set up His Creation a system that provides protection. We may not know just how He keeps us from danger, but this mishnah does advise us of three things that put us outside that protection. Anyone who does not heed these three things takes their own life in their own hands.

Chapter 3 Mishnah 4b
Torah elevates a mundane table to be the table of the King. Torah is higher than the heavens and hence it is not in the category of, “The heavens are the heavens of HaShem.” Therefore, the table at which Torah is said HaShem’s table and those present are privileged, as His servants, to partake of the King’s table.

Chapter 3 Mishnah 3 and 4a
True Torah study involves interaction and communication with other people. “Words of Torah” are found with two or more people communicating with speech, but with only one individual they only think, not speak. Even if the individual articulates the words, they are not truly talking but thinking out loud.

Chapter 3 Mishnah 2
Human creation was unique. When the other creatures were created, many of each kind were created, all at the same time. Adam, however, was created alone, and even the female did not yet have a separate existence.
