Chapter 3 18c
“You are children to HaShem.”
The relevant characteristics of a child are:
1) The child is the parent’s.
2) A parent values the child for the child themselves, and not for any utility they may provide.
The people of Yisra’el are called “children” of HaShem because they are His, and because they were created as an end in their own right, and not to serve some other purpose. Indeed, the world itself was created to serve His people and therefore only they are called “children.” That is why His love for Yisra’el is like that of a father towards his own child, and why we can have complete bond with Him.

Chapter 3 18b
The Image of G-d–a Deeper Explanation
The “image of G-d,” tzelem Elohim, is a spark that flows from G-d and infuses Divinity into each person. It is an aura, the radiance of life that lights a person’s face. This radiance is the very essence of existing. All existence comes from G-d, and therefore every created thing has it to some degree. In objects, we sense it as a certain intangible beauty, but in man it is so G-dly that it is called tzelem Elohim, for nothing exists as fully as mankind, except for G-d.

Chapter 3 17b
The sages teach us that wisdom (intellect) is not an intrinsic part of us, but is acquired and can be lost. Silence helps us to acquire wisdom, plus it helps us to maintain the wisdom acquired. The faculty of speech is somewhat physical, which is the opposite of intellectual. Since opposites cannot exist simultaneously, one must suspend conceptual activity in order to speak aloud. Hence, therefore, silence strengths the intellect (wisdom) by enabling it to act effectively.

Chapter 3 Mishnah 16b n 17a
The sages teach us that if we do not greet others with a cheerful expression, they will feel unappreciated, and possibly hurt their feelings. “Receive everyone cheerfully” is more positive and substantial advice, it is intended to honor those you greet.

Chapter 3 Mishnah 15b
HaShem has placed us in a world which is a physical link to holiness in this life and a corridor to the World to Come. One who rejects the link to holiness in this world has no means to attain the World to Come.

Chapter 3 Mishnah 14 ‘n 15a
Late morning sleep, midday wine, children’s chatter, and sitting in meeting houses of the ignorant.
Late morning sleep: abrogates the morning prayer that Avraham instituted.
Midday wine: abrogates the noontime prayer that Yitzchak instituted.
Childrens’s chatter: which means engaging in the foolish talk found among children, is a misuse of the special blessing of children that was Ya’akov’s privilege.
Sitting in the meeting house of the ignorant: places one at a distant from the community of Yisra’el.
