Light to the Nations – with Rabbi Chaim Richman
Weekly series with new teachings available every Thursday.
Next week on Light to the Nations:
Palm of Deborah

“You have turned my lament into dancing for me; You loosened my sackcloth and girded me with joy.” (Psalms 30:12) Tu b’Av, the 15th day of the month of Av, is the day, in primordial pre-time, in which man was “married” to his purpose: to serve G-d in gladness. Torah teaches us that life is meant for happiness, the happiness of fulfilling the word of Torah and the nearness of G-d’s presence, and that we are to be full of the joy that the knowledge of G-d bequeaths us.

Moshe beseeches G-d with 515 entreaties to enter into the land of Israel. G-d denies Moshe’s plea, yet immediately after, Moshe says, “For what great nation is there that has G-d so near to it, as HaShem our G-d is at all times that we call upon Him?” (Deut. 4:7) Could it be that G-d always answers our prayers, even if not always to our liking?

Va’etchanan (Deuteronomy 3:23-7:11)
Parashat Va’etchanan is read on Shabbat:

The destruction of the Holy Temple is a manifestation of G-d’s rebuke, our Father’s chastisement of His children. But like any earthly father, our heavenly Father desires only that we repair our way, and return to Him, fulfilling our potential by rebuilding the Holy Temple, today.

The darkest day on the Hebrew calendar, the day marking the destruction of the Holy Temple, is also the brightest, most intense point of light,

Moshe rabbeinu rebukes his generation for their failures, but at the same time states, “you are today as the stars of the heavens.” (Deut. 1:10) While our transgressions are of the moment, our good deeds and achievements are lights that will shine like the stars, enlightening others for generations to come.

Devarim (Deuteronomy 1:1-3:22)

We serve G-d by drawing near to Him, and making Him present in every aspect of our lives, from our most sublime moments to our most mundane. To do so, our relationship with G-d must be a living relationship, in accordance with Torah, and expressing the unique qualities of our own souls.
