Temple Institute Shows
Temple Talk is a weekly internet radio webcast with Rabbi Chaim Richman and Yitzchak Reuven of the Temple Institute.
This week features:
The ‘Escape Ramp’ of Elul
The Monstrous Hordes of the Islamic State: The World is in Denial
It’s Elul, repentance is in the air, the King is in the field, and it’s Temple Talk’s favorite time of year. It’s a time to get down, get real, and slam on the brakes of lives that at times seem to be running out of control. Yitzchak Reuven and Rabbi Richman continue to wax eloquent on the special qualities and spiritual propensities of this month, shedding new light and sharing their innovative thoughts. At the same time, our hosts present a global reality check on Islamic terror vs. the world’s preoccupation with Israel, and deliver a blistering critique of the world’s apathy in the face of the growing horrors of the Islamic State. After all, who’s really destroying the world? Is it the Islamic monsters of ISIS, or the Jews who are building houses for their children in the Land of Israel, who dare to ‘expropriate’ land in Eretz Yisrael?

The great concern Torah evinces for an unsolved murder, as in the case of the ‘axed calf’ is a harsh contrast to the laws of warfare which precede it and call upon all Israelite warriors to be fearless and merciless when fighting a divinely mandated war. Yet there is no contradiction between these seemingly disparate commandments. On the contrary, it is because Torah holds up and sanctifies the life of every individual that we must be unsparing when fighting enemies who seek our destruction.

The Month of Elul
Parashat Shoftim and Operation Protective Edge: “Who is the man who is afraid to win this war? Let him go and return to his house.”
The month of Elul has arrived! Elul is a time for teshuva (repentance), and resolve for the future. This week’s edition of Temple Talk welcomes the beautiful month of Elul, a time of serious soul-searching, introspection and spiritual growth, in preparation for the coming Days of Awe. Our hosts remind us that this month’s special propensity for getting things back on track applies not only to each individual, but is equally true on the national level. Yitzchak Reuven and Rabbi Richman wonder aloud if our national teshuva for Elul might just be… to win this war?! Or are we actually afraid to win? Should the IDF be ‘containing’ Hamas, ‘restoring quiet,’ or destroying the enemy? Echoes can be heard reverberating from this week’s Torah portion of Shoftim, wherein we learn of the anointed priest who warns the Israelite soldiers before going out to battle: (Deut. Ch. 20) “Who is the man who is fearful and fainthearted? Let him go and return to his house, and let him not melt the heart of his fellows…”

Who is that false prophet that Torah warns us against? How can he perform wonders if he is false, and if he is false why does he appear? Why does G-d empower him to perform wonders, if not to ensnare Israel? There are many false prophets today in the business of making false promises promising peace and prosperity if only Israel will turn her back on G-d’s Torah. We have been warned!
Re’eh (Deuteronomy 11:26-16:17)

Prophecies of Consolation
The Place that I Will Choose” From the Beginning of Time
As we wind down the month of Menachem Av and prepare to welcome the month of Elul, this week’s Torah portion of parashat Re’eh, which opens with a blessing and a curse, emphasizes the sanctity of the Land of Israel. That sanctity requires a high standard…the very first task entrusted to Israel upon entering the Land is to rid it of all vestiges of idolatry. ‘You are children to Hashem your G-d,’ the portions states… and everything about that relationship means that Israel is out there by herself. In this week’s edition of Temple Talk Yitchak Reuven and Rabbi Richman reflect upon Israel’s place among the nations in the light of the world’s reaction to Operation Protective Edge. Plus: The Temple Mount is mainstreamed by the Orthodox American establishment!

The land of Israel – every grain of it – belongs to the people of Israel. By virtue of her diligent adherence to G-d’s commandments, Israel will come into undisputed possession of the land. No man can take this away – not even the president of the United States.

Don’t Tread on Me!
In praise of the Land of Israel
The month of Av has a split personality. Although the ninth day, Tisha B’Av, marks the climax of our mourning period for the Holy Temple, the month begins to literally turn around in the middle with the joyous minor holiday of Tu B’Av. The remainder of the month of Av begins the preparation for Elul and the High Holy Days. This week on Temple Talk, Yitzchak Reuven and Rabbi Richman examine the significance of this elusive cycle of time, as well as the special messages of this week’s Torah portion of Ekev. What are the commandments that people have a tendency to ‘trample underfoot’, and why? What is the connection between the Land of Israel, growing global antisemitism, and a bottle of coca-cola? And now that Tisha B’Av is behind us, we ask: Are we truly moving closer to the building of the Holy Temple?
