Biblical Faith – with Shmuel “Sam” Peak

“I am happy that you serve HaShem, that you trust in Him deeply and rely on Him in all your affairs, and that you freed your mind from the thought that any creature can help you without the Creator. You are indeed one who trusts in HaShem truly and wholeheartedly.

“However, it is not right that you conceal from your fellowmen the high degree of piety that you have attained. Now that you have attained mastery over yourself and have overcome your passions, it is proper to show your deeds to people and reveal your heart to them. This way you will be honored by them in this world and will leave a good name among them, as it says in Scripture: ‘I will give them in My House and within My walls a monument and a name, better than the sons or daughters’ (Yeshiyahu 56:5); ‘I will make you a great name, a name like the great ones in the land’ (Shmuel II, 7:9).

“Moreover, people will learn from your conduct, and you will be rewarded through them. Therefore, do not hide from them your deeds, except those that it is impossible to reveal and to show other people. You will have honor and prestige in this world, and a goodly reward in the World-to-Come.”

The land of Israel – every grain of it – belongs to the people of Israel. By virtue of her diligent adherence to G-d’s commandments, Israel will come into undisputed possession of the land. No man can take this away – not even the president of the United States.

How important is the land of Israel? How essential is it to the children of Israel and to the fulfilling of the Torah of Israel? How crucial is it to all mankind that the nation of Israel is sovereign in the land of Israel? How vital is the land of Israel to G-d that He swore it to Avraham, Yitzchak and Yaakov and their descendants forever? Moshe reveals to Israel the land and its beauty.

If, however, you see fit to assume, to whatever extent you can, additional duties, beyond what is required — provided that you fulfill those that are obligatory, that your motive is love of piety, that your action is in harmony with reason and has not the remotest connection with base desire — the resolution is good. You will be rewarded for it, and, in undertaking it, you do not deviate from the view of the Early Ones, for they have said:
Make a fence for the Torah [Avot 1:1]. Why was Yerushalaiyim destroyed? Because they based their actions on Biblical law [Torah], and did not go beyond the strict requirements of the Torah [Bava Metsia 30b]. said R. Huna: Whoever is involved only in Torah study is like one who has no G-d, as it says, “For a long time Yisra’el was without the true G-d” [Diveri Ha-Yamim II, 15:3] — the inference is that without both Torah and acts of grace, one is “without the true G-d” [Avodah Zarah 17b].

Moshe rabbenu  opens his final words to the children of Israel with gentle chastisement. Before they enter the land it is important that they be reminded of their past errors in order to guard them against repeating those mistakes. Today’s current events remind us that our generation still has much work ahead in order to fully inherit, conquer and settle the land. The current conflict in Gaza is a harsh reminder of the very golden calf and spy-like misconceptions that have misled Israel for many years and lengthened our journey to redemption.

May we learn from these past errors, re-gird our loins, retake our land and recapture our destiny!

It is said that wisdom, when used in the right way, is a remedy for every ill; but if one veers off course with it, it becomes a disease that spreads through the entire body, for which there is no antidote or cure. Hence, the Torah, is compared to fire, as it says, “Is not My word like fire?” (Yirmiyahu 23:29); for, like fire, it enlightens the eyes with its light, as it says: G-d’s commandment is pure, enlightening, the eyes” (Tehillim 19:9); Your word is a lamp to my feet, a light on my path” (Tehillim 119:105). But it burns with its flame whoever turns off its path, as it says: “For with fire G-d executes judgment” (Yeshiyahu 66:16); “He will rain down burning coals on the wicked” (Tehillim 11:6); “If I say, ‘I will not mention it or speak any more in His Name,’ then [His Word] lodges in my heart like a blazing fire, shut up in my bones” (Yirmiyahu 20:9).

Life has its way stations. They are part of the plan. Each is a stepping stone along the way to where we need to be, to the final destination G-d has determined for us. As with the life of an individual, so too, with the life of the nation of Israel. Every son and daughter of Israel’s personal journey is intertwined with the journey of the nation as a whole. Our final destination as individuals and as a people is here in the land of Israel. Stay the course. Enter the land.
