After the covenant was sealed and the principal ethical, social, and religious laws were given, the Israelities were requested to donate their material wealth for sacred causes. How can one possible give something materially to G-d, He owns and created everthing? The Torah does not state, and let them give, but states, and let them take. The word portion is mentioned thrice in this passage, alludes to three different truma. The first was the mandatory beka of silver given by each person for making the siver sockets, which were the foundation for the Tabernacle. The second, an identical amount, served for the purchase of the communal sacrifices. The third was used for the construction of the Tabernacle itself.
