Rabbi Richman, just back from his never ending journey throughout the great United States, and stranded for four days in the snows of New Jersey, now reunited with his best friend Yitzchak Reuven, shares his experiences and reflects upon the “Temple Conundrum:” Who is the Holy Temple for, anyway? So many people think it is either problematic, archaic, dangerous, or inconvenient. But those opinions are…. opinions. Whatever happened to doing something for G-d? Remember Him? As Rashi so eloquently states: “For My Name’s sake… “

“They shall make an ark of acacia wood” (Exodus 25:10) Aron HaBrit – The Ark of the Covenant – performs no function in the Divine service, and is approached but once a year when the Kohen Gadol – the High Priest – enters the Holy of Holies on Yom Kippur – the Day of Atonement. It is the one Temple vessel that actually serves as a permanent receptacle – holding the Tablets of the Law. Yet of all the vessels described in the Torah reading of Terumah, the Ark of the Covenant remains the most compelling to the imagination. From the Ark emanates the supernal light of Torah and a reflection in this world of the perfected world and the pure light of the Garden of Eden.

The physical characteristics that comes of having a beginning allow a change and hence preparation. That is why this world is the opportunity to prepare for the next world. Since the World to Come is a place of stability and durability, it is too late to make preparations there.
In a shell, only this world offers the opportunity to prepare for eternity.

We go from the soaring heights of Mount Sinai to the roll-up-your-sleeves nitty-gritty of learning and applying Torah laws and lessons to our everyday lives. Living in the absolute presence of G-d that prevailed at the Sinai revelation is not something that we human beings are capable of sustaining or surviving. But we can and must treat one another in such a way that G-d will desire that His presence will dwell among us. The Torah reading of Mishpatim teaches us how to live peacefully with one another. Only when that lesson has been learned can we turn our collective hearts and efforts to the grandest of plans which lays in store: the building of a Sanctuary for G-d here on earth. Also, a short history of freedom, from Sinai to Avraham “Yair” Stern, whose yartzheit is this coming Sunday, (25 Shvat).
