Mishnah 10
The sages extolled the virtue of labor, especially when we love to work rather than just accepting it. The Rabbis said:
Greater is the one who enjoys the effort of their own hands than one who fears Heaven. It is written regarding one who benefits from their own efforts, “You eat to labor of your hands; you will be happy and it will be well with you,” meaning that “you will be happy” in this world and “it will be well with you” in the World to Come. By contrast, of the one who fears Heaven, it is written only, “Happy is the individual who fears HaShem.
The individual who is self-reliant and self supporting—who is content and happy with what HaShem has granted them to earn and accomplish—is not in need of other people for support and not in need of additional possessions. That person lacks nothing and is by definition complete.
