Chapter 3 18b
The Image of G-d–a Deeper Explanation
The “image of G-d,” tzelem Elohim, is a spark that flows from G-d and infuses Divinity into each person. It is an aura, the radiance of life that lights a person’s face. This radiance is the very essence of existing. All existence comes from G-d, and therefore every created thing has it to some degree. In objects, we sense it as a certain intangible beauty, but in man it is so G-dly that it is called tzelem Elohim, for nothing exists as fully as mankind, except for G-d.

Who was Pinchas? Where did he come from? What was he made of? Was his act of zealotry a true “Jewish” reaction? Was his ability to act in the moment to defend G-d’s honor, to assuage G-d’s anger a true “Jewish” reaction? Absolutely!

The Holy of Holies is the holiest place on earth: What is holiness? How can we become holy? Can a place or time be imbued with sanctity? Torah teaches us an emphatic yes to all these questions. And the soul/time/space nexus where the holiest moment of the year, (Yom Kippur), and the holiest spot on earth , (the Holy of Holies), and the individual who represents the holiest possibility of man, (the Kohen Gadol – High Priest), meet and merge together is nothing less than the entire purpose of creation. (This LTTN teaching was originally webcast in June, 2009.)

Time is a gift from G-d, that we can channel and utilize to effect change and bring about renewal. Rosh Chodesh – the festival of the New Moon – was given especially to the women of Israel as a reward for their refusal to participate in the sin of the golden calf. Why Rosh Chodesh? What is the spiritual connection between the moon and the daughters of Israel?

Mankind–the Image of G-d
“And G-d created mankind in His own image; in the image of G-d He created him; male and female He created them.”
Bilaam, the heathen prophet, thought to curse Israel by pointing out her shortcomings. Paradoxically, his attempt to smear Israel only served to highlight the love between G-d and His people, which is not diminished by her occasional transgressions.
Balak (Numbers 22:2-25:9)
