Five possessions did the Holy One, Blessed is he, acquire for Himself in His world, and they are: Torah, one possession; heaven and earth, one possession; Avraham, one possession; Yisra’el, one possession; the Holy Temple, one possession.
1) Torah is the set of His Divine decrees upon all created.
2) Heaven and earth are the entire world.
3) G-d’s Name is called upon Avraham.
4) G-d’s Name is called upon the nation of Yisra’el, for He is called “the G-d of Yisra’el.”
5) His Name is called upon the Temple as it says, “this house is called by Your Name.”
In summary, these five things are G-d’s possessions because they are fully in His domain; they are pertinent to G-d as the Deity; and they are unique in fulfilling that role.

A teaching from Rabbi Chaim of Volozhin. Ruach Chaim.

Any new novel idea and/or Torah idea, a student might consider as new to them, they should realize that it was taught to Moshe at Mt. Sinai directly from the mouth of HaShem. In fact, this is true today; whatever a person is learning at a present stage of their life it is being expressed by HaShem as well. Thus, David said, it is the Torah of my mouth that brings me to love for the Torah. It is then when David realized that he and HaShem recited the words of Torah together.
For it is when you walk with the Torah it will guide you and led you all the days of your life. Whenever a person is in doubt, one should seek how to proceed through the studying of the Torah. For within the Torah lies an answer. And if you stay true to the instructions of the Torah you will not stumble.

Temple Talk is a weekly internet radio webcast with Rabbi Chaim Richman and Yitzchak Reuven of the Temple Institute.

This week features:

Shelach: Sending the Spies: Why an’ what’s the reason for?

Too Many Choices, Too Many Voices, Too Many Spies Spoil the Mission!

SpiesAn innocent sneak preview into the soon to be conquered holy land of Israel turns into a debacle that reverberates throughout the centuries. Why were the spies sent into the land and why did they praise the land but despise their own selves? These questions, and many more, are asked by Tzvi Richman, filling in for his father, Rabbi Richman, who is currently in the USA teaching Torah, and Yitzchak Reuven. Was this a case of too much democracy? We witness the rise of the two spies, Yehoshua and Calev, who defied the the defeatists and would become the only men of their generation to enter the land thirty nine years later. Yehoshua certainly learned the lesson of the failed spy mission. We see this when he himself orders two spies to slip into Jericho. But have we ourselves learned the lesson? Are we committed to take the land and hold onto it, come what will?

Heaven – or at least, the Garden of Eden, in its earthly embodiment in the land of Israel – awaits the generation of the desert. All they need to do is pack their gear and step inside. From whence the spiritual negativity that drove them from “heaven’s” door even as they were perched to enter? Their great failing remains for our generation to overcome and to correct. G-d, despite His great anger at their disregard for the land, blesses them with the commandments concerning the wine libations and the taking of challah, both of which are contingent on being in the land of Israel. In this manner G-d both comforts them that their children will someday enter the land, and instructs them once in the land of Israel, their Divine mission will be the rectification of the failing of Adam, the first man.

Rabbi Yose would indeed have agreed to come if they needed him to teach Torah, but he was not willing to leave his strong Torah community solely to become an adviser. He refused the post because of his commitment (close to Torah) to Torah study; indeed, his soul was bound up with love for Torah.

The Return of Prophecy

Amidst the turmoil described in Numbers 8:1-12:16, (Parashat Beha’alotcha), is the spread of prophecy to the people, an occurrence applauded by Moshe. Does this presage the return of prophecy in our day?
