The month of Elul is the time for learning that our own mistakes and imperfections never create a distance between G-d and ourselves. Elul presents us with a superb opportunity to rekindle our passion for life in a world with G-d, just before the onset of the High Holy Days of the month of Tishrei.

Elul, the unsung month, has so much to offer as we prepare ourselves for the new year. “The King is in the field,” and the days of Elul are laden with spiritual opportunity for taking stock, redirecting our energies, and being seen and heard by the King as He makes His rounds, seeking us out, looking to draw us closer to Him.

Maimonides’ Laws of the Chosen House, chapter five: Eight chambers open into the Court of the Israelites. Having already described the chambers along the southern border of the Israelite Court in last week’s teaching, Rabbi Richman goes on to describe the chambers along the northern wall of the Israelite Court: The Chamber of Hewn Stone, the Chamber of the Wheel, and the Parhedrin: the private quarters of the High Priest. The Rabbi describes at length the four lotteries which were conducted daily in the Chamber of Hewn Stone for the purposes of assigning tasks for the serving priests.
