Temple Talk
Temple Talk is a weekly internet radio webcast with Rabbi Chaim Richman and Yitzchak Reuven of the Temple Institute.
This week features:
The Secret of the Mayan Calendar: It’s the Jews’ Fault, Stupid
Between the Books of Genesis and Exodus: You Have Now Entered the Twilight Zone
This exceptionally passionate edition of Temple Talk is set against the backdrop of the transition between the books of Genesis, which we conclude this week, and Exodus. As the people of Israel slowly, almost imperceptibly pass from freedom to bondage in a twinkling, Rabbi Richman rages against the dying of the light. At the same time our hosts take a sobering look at growing antisemitism all around us and discover that while the complacency of the exile may lull Jews to sleep, there’s an urgent need to wake up right now. Yitzchak Reuven and Rabbi Richman explore the meaning of the “Chosen” people and ask outright: Chosen for what? If you are not ready for your life to be inexorably challenged and changed, you had best skip this week’s show.

This week features:
The Hotel Egypt: We Are All Just Prisoners Here of Our Own Device
The Prime Minister’s Visit to the Kotel: Where Has True Jewish Bravery Gone?
The month of Tevet begins with the light of Chanukah but ultimately descends – at least ostensibly – into darkness. At first glance Tevet seems characterized by anguish and destruction. What happened to the joy of Chanukah, and Temple dedication? Haven’t we learned anything? In this week’s fast-moving, passion-filled edition of Temple Talk, Yitzchak Reuven and Rabbi Richman discover that indeed, the Chanukah story is not over yet… the challenges it presents continue into the month of Tevet and into our own times, and we are still writing it today. So too, as we read this week in parashat Vayigash of Israel’s reunion and “happy” descent into Egypt, we sense the shape of things to come… and suddenly we realize with alarming clarity that we are reading the story of our own lives.

This week features:
Yosef, Dreams and Increasing Light in the World
No Time for Platitudes: The Bottomless Deep Depths of the Selling of Yosef
Caught in the sight enabling and dream inspiring bright lights of the all-natural miracle of the cruse of pure oil, the eight days of light and the Chanukah victory of the few over the many, Rabbi Chaim Richman and Yitzchak Reuven connect the dots between the saga of Yosef and his brothers, of which we learn in this week’s Torah reading, and the black darkness of Helenism that the Greek oppressors tried to foist upon the righteous souls of the Maccabees and their followers. Just as Yosef announced to all he met his undying allegiance to G-d, so too we are instructed to place our Chanukah lamps outside our homes to announce to the world that we bow down to no man and wil not rest until G-d’s home is restored.

The Nations are Angry: Building Jewish Houses in Israel is ‘Counterproductive’
Temple Talk is back! After a break of several weeks, Yitzchak Reuven and Rabbi Richman join together again in Jerusalem in a brand-new, fast-moving, evocative and passion-filled episode of Temple Talk. Our hosts reflect on their experiences earlier this month at the Temple Institute’s 25th Anniversary Gala held in Dallas, TX, and review recent events in Israel and abroad through the prism of the current Torah readings. Connecting the dots, Yitzchak and the Rabbi move deftly between Yaakov’s confrontations with Eisav, Operation Pillar of Defense, recent United Nations obscenities and as usual, the vilification of Israel at the hands of the nations. Just as Yosef had to descend to Egypt to prepare for something big, it’s all part of the plan of Redemption!

This week features:
Abraham’s Inward Journey: Proving the Existence of G-d
Enter Abraham, Citizen of the World and Father of All Spiritual Seekers
One week into the elusive month of Mar Cheshvan already finds us celebrating two “minor” events with major implications: The first is the 837th anniversary of the famed sage Maimonides’ ascent to the Temple Mount in the face of grave danger to pray there, on the 6th of Cheshvan 1165. The second is the changing of our daily prayers into “winter mode” here in the Land of Israel, which takes place on 7 Cheshvan, when we begin to ask G-d for rain. In this week’s edition of Temple Talk, Yitzchak Reuven and Rabbi Richman explore these events and their modern-day implications, even as this week’s Torah reading of parashat Lech Lecha introduces the daring iconoclast Avram, soon to become Avraham, onto the scene of world history. He found out that all the truth were lies, and went on to discover that there is really only One G-d. Mankind would never be the same again.

This week features:
The Raging Floodwaters of Noach & Bountiful Blessings of Choni
The Bittersweet Month of MarCheshvan: The Double-Edged Sword of Potential
With sweetest blessings for this new month of MarCheshvan! This week’s edition of Temple Talk, recorded and first broadcast on Rosh Chodesh I, the first day of the new month of MarCheshvan, explores the dimensions of this month’s enigmatic themes, the ancient element of water, which is at once both the bringer of Divine blessing, and yet the tool of Divine retribution, as it was in the days of Noach, wherein we learn – in this week’s Torah portion – of the Great Deluge which took place during this very month of MarCheshvan. But yet here in the Land of Israel, where every drop of water is seen as the greatest Heavenly gift, we begin asking for rain during this month. And this month, devoid of any major holidays, holds the key to the future, for both Israel as well as for all humanity. Tune into this week’s fascinating Temple Talk to find out why!
