Temple Talk
Temple Talk is a weekly internet radio webcast with Rabbi Chaim Richman and Yitzchak Reuven of the Temple Institute.
This week features:
Rachel’s Tears for her Children
Parashat Toldot and the Unesco Declaration: Esav Wants it All
Yaakov’s Birthright & Blessings, and Personal Responsibility for the Course of Human Events
How do we understand the perplexing struggle between Yaakov and Esav? What do these forces represent, and how is their struggle ultimately resolved? Parashat Toldot comes alive in this week’s edition of Temple Talk as Rabbi Richman and Yitzchak Reuven examine the nature of Esav and the blessings the patriarch Yitzchak gave to his son Yaakov in the light of our modern world.
Unesco declares that Ma’arat HaMachpela in Hebron as well as Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem are mosques. Why is Rachel crying for her children (Jeremiah 31), and why is Rachel G-d’s guarantor that her children will return to their land? A startling Midrash reveals our mother Rachel’s righteous character.

This week features:
The Vatican Synod: Princes of Darkness, Cloaked in Hypocrisy
Chosen People: Chosen for What?
This Just In, World: The One G-d of Israel Doesn’t Change His Mind: Deal With It!
This week is Parashat Chayei Sarah, which opens up with our forefather Avraham’s purchase of the “Double Cave” in Hebron. Why does Torah emphasize this so much, and what is our connection to this mysterious, ancient place? When it comes to Hebron, Jerusalem and Shechem the Torah cries out “Show me the money!” This week Temple Talk examines the Jewish people’s connection (“connection” is the very meaning of the word Hebron) to this ancient Jewish city, especially in the light (or should we say, darkness) of this week’s statements issued by the Synod of Catholic bishops which essentially “cancels” promises made by G-d to our father Avraham, to all the patriarchs, to Moses and to the entire people of Israel. What exquisite timing! What better week to cast doubt on the Biblical connection to our homeland, than the very week in which Torah testifies to that connection! We’re not even surprised. Rabbi Richman almost has apoplexy live on Temple Talk but the show goes on!

This week features:
The Lives of Abraham and Isaac are Today’s Headlines
The Binding of Isaac & the Holy Temple
The Real Life Drama Taking Place Today on the Temple Mount: What is True Reverence for G-d?
Remember Gary Hobson on TV’s “Early Edition?” The guy who always got tomorrow’s paper today? Well, Temple Talk goes one step better, but without the cat! Temple Talk is really a special news program, because we bring you tomorrow’s news… yesterday. Does that make sense? What a twist! Every week when we study the weekly Torah portion we are really deciphering the news of the day, and these weeks of the book of Genesis which describe the lives of our holy forefathers Abraham and Isaac elucidate today’s news, as well as provide an understanding of Jewish purpose and destiny.
The future Holy Temple figures prominently in the story of the binding of Isaac, in more ways than one…and the conflict between Isaac and Ishmael, between Torah and Islam is being clarified and rectified in that very place… “as it is said, on the mountain Hashem will be seen” (Gen. 22:14).

This week features:
Mar Cheshvan, Lech Lecha, the Rambam and the Faith Connection
The Original Man of Faith
All about the theme of faith, which shows up everywhere, all around us: It’s the backdrop of everything associated with the month of Mar Cheshvan, as well as the Torah portions and the career of our illustrious forefather Avraham. And the great Maimonides’ historic pilgrimage to the Temple Mount that took place this week, 835 years ago, was also an aspect of his undying faith that the Holy Temple would be rebuilt as he was to write, years later, in his classic Misahneh Torah.

This week features:
Out of the Sukkah, and into the rain, we welcome Mar Cheshvan, a month of great potential and the month of the third Holy Temple.
The elusive and enigmatic month of Mar Cheshvan arrives this Friday and Shabbat, and coming on the heels of the action-packed month of Tishrei, at first glance appears disappointing … until we begin to understand what can really happen in Mar Cheshvan if only we are ready.
As we reflect upon the Sukkot that was and its theme of water, and as we read this week’s Torah portion of Noah and the flood, we also realize that this month of Cheshvan begins the rainy season in the Land of Israel. It is also the month that the floodwaters began to fall back in the days of Noah. But the Land of Israel brings the blessing of water to the entire world, and will one day serve as the “Noah’s ark” for all humanity … tune into this week’s Temple Talk as Yitzchak Reuven and Rabbi Richman talk about creation and renewal, the Holy Temple, and the cycles of time that we are all a part of.

Getting ready for the world to begin, & finding our place in it
The Shofar of the Sixth Day
Moshe’s last day before Israel: Exhorting his people to choose life and blessing!
While Rabbi Richman is off site, preparing spiritually for the upcoming Days of Awe, Yitzchak Reuven, manning the microphone, has what to say about our upcoming “day in court,” and about the great lengths this week’s double Torah reading of Nitzavim-Vayelech goes to in encouraging and preparing us for Rosh HaShana. Our choices may seem obvious, but they may be deceptively simple, all the same.
