Coarse lust or true love? Superficial yearnings or deep prophecy? Life is full of battles and each battle brings out the worst or the best in us. We are only human, and that is precisely why Torah provides a lifeline, whatever our strengths or failings. Today, in the month of Elul, we need to see ourselves for who we are, and use this special time of reflection and repentance to return to the person we are meant to be.

“Righteousness, righteousness, you shall pursue… “ Only by righteousness and justice can the nation of Israel guarantee its staying power in the land of Israel. Not by negotiating with the enemy, or releasing murderers, or subcontracting her security, or by subordinating her own needs to the demands of her “friends” and “allies.” Righteousness, by way of righteous judges who sit in judgment in the place that G-d will choose – the Holy Temple on the Temple Mount, Jerusalem.

Parashat Re’eh  teaches us how to properly conduct the affairs of the nation of Israel in the land of Israel. It warns us against false prophets who preach transgression and weak leaders who make “painful decisions” which are nothing less than gross violations of everything that Torah teaches us, attempting to lead Israel into pacts with foreign cultures and false gods, foisting a Moloch-like death cult upon the righteous people of Israel.

The land of Israel – every grain of it – belongs to the people of Israel. By virtue of her diligent adherence to G-d’s commandments, Israel will come into undisputed possession of the land.

Shma Yisrael – Hear O Israel – we are commanded to love G-d with all our heart, with all our soul and with all our might, wherever we might be, whatever our disappointments, regardless of whether G-d has answered our prayers in the affirmative. Loving G-d is something we must strive to do always.

Va’etchanan (Deuteronomy 3:23-7:11)

Moshe, in his farewell address to Israel which comprises the entirety of the book of Deuteronomy, opens with words of rebuke. Determined to instruct and not to hurt his beloved people, Moshe  “sweetens” his words of reproach with love and tenderness. As we approach the fateful 9th of Av  we are sorely in need of sweet reproof as the call for us to rise up and rebuild the Holy Temple is greater now than ever.

We witness no sweeter reproof than that delivered by our own children in the short video we have prepared for these days: The Children Are Ready II: Be sure to watch it!

Devarim (Deuteronomy 1:1-3:22)

The Children Are Ready II

On Tisha B’Av, the Jewish people mourn the destruction of the Holy Temple. Seated on the floor as mourners, the adults in the synagogue recite the traditional kinnot dirges. But is the goal simply the continuation of the mourning, for the sake of mourning? The children have a different idea of what needs to be done… Please watch and share!

This is a sequel to last year’s viral video The Children are Ready with over 400,000 views.

The Temple Institute thanks all the wonderful children and adults who helped to create this video!
