The seismic shocks, the tectonic rumblings, the pulsating magnetic fields could all be felt from one end of creation to the next when Yehudah drew near to Yosef in their battle for custody of Binyamin. Neither brother was willing to abandon Binyamin and that’s what G-d wanted to know! When Yosef revealed his true identity to Yehudah and the others, they all realized that they could lay down their arms: It was all in G-d’s hands!

The month of Tevet begins with the light of Chanukah but ultimately descends – at least ostensibly – into darkness. At first glance Tevet seems characterized by anguish and destruction. What happened to the joy of Chanukah, and Temple dedication? Haven’t we learned anything? In this week’s fast-moving, passion-filled edition of Temple Talk, Yitzchak Reuven and Rabbi Richman discover that indeed, the Chanukah story is not over yet… the challenges it presents continue into the month of Tevet and into our own times, and we are still writing it today. So too, as we read this week in parashat Vayigash of Israel’s reunion and “happy” descent into Egypt, we sense the shape of things to come… and suddenly we realize with alarming clarity that we are reading the story of our own lives.

What you should first consider the origin of man and the beginning of his existence. You will then see that the first grace which HaShem bestows upon man is that he is brought into existence from nonexistence: The fundamental elements pass into plant form, which becomes food and changes into seamen and blood. This is transformed into animal life, which finally assumes the form of a human being — a living, speaking, and mortal being — who goes through changes and transformations, and is affected by various factors and ever-changing conditions which are carefully integrated and well coordinated.

The story of Yosef’s descent into the darkness of Egypt and his rise to leadership coincides each year with the eight day festival of Chanukah. They likewise share the same deep lesson: All of life’s seemingly chaotic randomness is, in truth, directed by G-d. Our role is not merely to trust in G-d’s benevolence but to work without rest to insure our own part in His great plan. This is what distinguished Yosef and this is what distinguished the Chashmonean kohanim who led the Jewish revolt against the Greek oppressors.

Caught in the sight enabling and dream inspiring bright lights of the all-natural miracle of the cruse of pure oil, the eight days of light and the Chanukah victory of the few over the many, Rabbi Chaim Richman and Yitzchak Reuven connect the dots between the saga of Yosef and his brothers, of which we learn in this week’s Torah reading, and the black darkness of Helenism that the Greek oppressors tried to foist upon the righteous souls of the Maccabees and their followers. Just as Yosef announced to all he met his undying allegiance to G-d, so too we are instructed to place our Chanukah lamps outside our homes to announce to the world that we bow down to no man and wil not rest until G-d’s home is restored.

How many kinds of marks of wisdom in creation are we capable of reflecting upon? The foundations of wisdom established in creation — for all its different species and individuals — are seven:
The first is the mark of wisdom manifest in the roots and elements of the world. The second foundation is the mark of wisdom manifest in the human species. The third is the mark of wisdom manifest in the formation of man, the structure of his body, the faculties of his soul, and the light of intellect with which the Creator distinguished him, giving him superiority over the other living creatures, who were endowed with reason. The fourth is the mark of wisdom manifest in the species of the other living creatures, from the smallest to the largest of them; those that fly, swim, creep, or move on four feet, and with various forms and qualities, uses and pleasures, and the benefits they bring to the world. The fifth is the mark of wisdom manifest in plants and minerals — which are at man’s disposal for the improvement of his lot — and in various benefits which man extracts from them according to their different natures, constitutions, and qualities.
