The attainments we can reach through the intellect are manifold. For example: through the intellect we come to know that we have a Creator Who is wise, everlasting, and one; Who has existed from all eternity, is infinite in power, and transcends time and space; Who is exalted above the qualities of His creatures and beyond their conception; Who is merciful, kind, and benevolent; Who is like nothing else, and nothing is like Him. Through the intellect we comprehend the wisdom, the power, and the mercy which pervade the universe; and we recognize the obligation to serve Him — as He is worthy of this because of His benevolence, both general and particular. Through the intellect we are confirmed in our faith in HaShem’s true Torah, given to Moshe His prophet, peace be upon him.

One should then contemplate and examine the uses of the members of the body and the various ways in which each one of them contributes to man’s welfare. The hands were created to give and take; the feet to walk; the eyes to see; the ears to hear; the nose to smell; the tongue to speak; the mouth to eat; the teeth to chew; the stomach to digest; the liver to purify the food; the tubes for removing superfluities; the bowels and bladder for temporary retention. The heart is the reservoir of natural heat and the well spring of life. The brain is the seat of the spiritual facilities and the source of sensation and the nerves. The womb preserves and develops the seed. And so it is with the rest of the members of the body; their hidden benefits are even greater than those which are known to us.

What you should first consider the origin of man and the beginning of his existence. You will then see that the first grace which HaShem bestows upon man is that he is brought into existence from nonexistence: The fundamental elements pass into plant form, which becomes food and changes into seamen and blood. This is transformed into animal life, which finally assumes the form of a human being — a living, speaking, and mortal being — who goes through changes and transformations, and is affected by various factors and ever-changing conditions which are carefully integrated and well coordinated.

How many kinds of marks of wisdom in creation are we capable of reflecting upon? The foundations of wisdom established in creation — for all its different species and individuals — are seven:
The first is the mark of wisdom manifest in the roots and elements of the world. The second foundation is the mark of wisdom manifest in the human species. The third is the mark of wisdom manifest in the formation of man, the structure of his body, the faculties of his soul, and the light of intellect with which the Creator distinguished him, giving him superiority over the other living creatures, who were endowed with reason. The fourth is the mark of wisdom manifest in the species of the other living creatures, from the smallest to the largest of them; those that fly, swim, creep, or move on four feet, and with various forms and qualities, uses and pleasures, and the benefits they bring to the world. The fifth is the mark of wisdom manifest in plants and minerals — which are at man’s disposal for the improvement of his lot — and in various benefits which man extracts from them according to their different natures, constitutions, and qualities.

Reflection on creation means becoming aware of the spiritual and physical elements of this world; its causes and effects; its rational and non-rational creatures; its inert and active materials; its animate objects and plants; its higher and lower parts; and realizing that the Creator, May He be exalted, assembled and ordered the world perfectly, divided it along clear lines, and made it such a way that it points to Him and reflects Him, just as a work of craftsman reflects the craftsman who created it, or a house the builder who built it. You should know that the whole world is made up of the material and the spiritual, so intimately mixed and fused that each of them sustain the other, like body and soul in living creatures.

We are bound by Rabbinic tradition to reflect on creation n the following statements: “Whoever knows how to calculate the astronomical cycles and stars and does not do so, of him Scripture says: “They have lyre and harp, timbrel and flute and wine at their feasts, and they do not notice HaShem’s works, they do not see His handiwork’ (Yeshiyahu 5:12)…From where do we know that one is obligated to calculate the cycles and stars? From the verse ‘Keep them and do them, for this is your wisdom and understanding in the sight of the nations who will hear all these rules’ (Devarim 4:6) — what wisdom and understanding is ‘in the sight of the nations’? Say: it is the calculation of cycles and stars” (Shabbot 75a); “Consider the cost of mitzvah against its reward, and the gain is sin against its loss” (Avot 2:1); “If the Torah had not been given to Yisra’el, we could have learned modesty from the cat, chastity from the dove, good manners from the rooster, and honesty from the ant” (Eruvin 100b).
The obligation to reflect on the created things and deduce proofs from traces of wisdom has been demonstrated.

Having opened with aspects of the wholehearted acknowledge of HaShem’s unity, the First Gate, and since reflection on the wisdom manifest in HaShem’s creations is the most direct way to verify His existence and the surest path to a true conception of Him, we must now follow the First Gate with a discussion of such reflection, so that each gate be positioned next to the gate most related to it, and every matter be followed by those matters that are relevant to it. These then will serve to obligate us in the service of HaShem, May His Name be exalted, Who created us for this purpose, as the Wise One, King Solomon said: “G-d has made it, so that mankind should revere Him” (Koheles 3:14).
